XOS Technologies Places HD Replay on 2010 Horizon for College Football
ORLANDO, Fla. – Jan. 4, 2010 – XOS Technologies, Inc., a leader in digital sports media, today announced that it is expanding its XOS Replay™ system to now include an enhanced high-definition version called XOS HD Replay™ for collegiate football. The announcement was made today by Mark Hudgins, general manager, XOS Facilities, Design and Integration (FDI).
“2010 will be a significant year for collegiate football officiating as we introduce our new HD Replay system,” Hudgins said. “Once again, we’re setting standards for content quality, workflow efficiency and facility integration. HD video quality provides clear advantages for officiating, and we’re pleased to present college football with the opportunity to transition to HD instant replay.”
XOS HD Replay differs in several ways from its standard definition (SD) predecessor, XOS Replay, which originally debuted in 2005 with the PAC 10 and Big 12 conferences. It is unlike satellite, cable or over-the-air broadcasts because it does not use video compression.
According to Tom Fuller, director of development at XOS, the uncompressed format provides the highest video quality available and provides the most information possible to enable officials to make precise decisions. When put into perspective, one second of compressed video (as seen on home televisions by fans) consists of an average of 19.4 million bits. However, one second of uncompressed video, as leveraged by the XOS HD Replay system, consists of approximately 1 billion bits.
Other advancements with the XOS HD Replay system include:
· Playback, data entry and touch-screen technologies
· Audio and video capture capacity for preservation purposes
· Export capabilities to portable storage or media delivery platforms
· Metadata integration component
· Reporting functionality
Additional distinctions include the ability to further integrate instant replay with content workflow, as recorded video can be ingested into third-party content delivery platforms. For example, anything that a team or conference captures can be ingested into the XOS Vault™ digital asset management system, the XOS Thunder™ digital video editing platform, the XOS Studio and other content management applications.
In addition to XOS HD Replay technologies in the booth, XOS will now provide fiber-optic infrastructure integration to best accommodate HD technologies through its recent partnership with Bexel Broadcast Services. As a result, XOS and Bexel will provide the marketplace with facility audits to assess the infrastructure of stadiums across the country.
“As we head into 2010, we anticipate that more of the collegiate football market will gear up for HD,” Hudgins said. “For those schools upgrading their production capabilities, our new partnership with Bexel and our content delivery and management systems allow us to accommodate the needs of college football officiating in a comprehensive manner.”
Nearly 125 sports teams within football, basketball and hockey use XOS Replay. XOS currently provides standard definition football instant replay systems to Conference USA and the PAC 10, Big 12, Sun Belt and Mid-American conferences. For basketball, it provides standard definition instant replay systems to the Sun Belt and Western Athletic conferences. For hockey, it provides standard definition instant replay systems to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, the Central Collegiate Hockey Association and numerous other hockey organizations.
