CONGRATULATIONS to the 2010 Conference Video Coordinators of the Year

The Collegiate Sports Video Association would like to congratulate all of the 2010 Conference Video Coordinators of the Year.  Each conference video coordinator votes within each conference for the top video coordinator.

The winner for each conference is now a finalist for the Bob Matey National Video Coordinator of the Year award.  

The conference winners for 2010 are:

ACC - Todd McCarthy - Georgia Tech

                Todd McCarthy enters his 12th season at Georgia Tech as Director of Video Operations after joining                   the Tech staff in the spring of 1998.

                McCarthy handles all practice, game and opponents’ video for the coaching staff while overseeing                         Tech’s video operations.

                In 2005, the Tech Video Department received the SAVVY Award from the Collegiate Sports Video                         Association for the year’s top highlight video. McCarthy is a 5-time winner of the Atlantic Coast Conference Video Director of the Year Award (2001, 2003, 2004, 2009 and 2010).

                McCarthy spent two years (1996-98) as Director of Sports Video at the University of Pittsburgh and                       three years (1993-96) in the same capacity at the University of Richmond. He also worked two years as a videographer and editor in the sports department at WRIC-TV, the ABC affiliate in Richmond, Va.

               A native of Richmond, Va., McCarthy earned his bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Communications from                Virginia Commonwealth University in 1992.

AT-LARGE - Jake Stroot - Appalachian St

       Jake Stroot is entering his 12th season with the Mountaineers.  A 2004 graduate of Appalachian State, Jake has overseen all technology and video related team needs and continues to play an important role in the Mountaineers winning tradition.  

      Stroot won the prestigious 2008 SAVVY Award.  Stroot's video earned first-place recognition over 24 entrants for the SAVVY award, which recognized the best in collegiate highlight and motivational videos.

      He resides in Boone with his wife, Ashleigh, and son, Peyton

Big East - Brett Kelley - West Virginia

      Brett Kelley is in his second year as the video coordinator for the West Virginia football program. He came to Morgantown after serving as the video coordinator and account executive for the Nashville Kats Arena football team for the past three years.

      Kelley is responsible for coordinating all aspects of the Mountaineer football program’s video efforts. With the football program, he handles the day-to-day video operations for practices and games, maintaining the recruiting internet server, film breakdown and exchange, the instant replay system and the production of highlight films.

      While in Nashville, he was responsible for setup and filming of home games and practices, handling video breakdown and cuts of game and practice footage, overseeing video exchange and filled coach and team requests for specific video cut-ups. He generated season ticket and group ticket sales accounts and took part in grassroots telemarketing campaigns.

      Prior to that, Kelley worked for the Tennessee Titans as the video operations assistant from March 2005 until December 2007. He filmed training camp, mini-camps and assisted in total operations of the video department. He operated the still-printers on the field for the coaches and players on the field and recorded and maintained officials’ copies during the games.

      During the 2004 season, he served as a marketing and promotions intern with the Nashville Sounds baseball team

      Kelley, a Morgantown native, graduated from University High School and played linebacker at Fairmont State. He earned his bachelor’s degree in general business with a concentration in sport management from Fairmont State in 2004.

      He and his wife, Emily, live in the Morgantown area

Big Ten - Matt Harper/Tom Shepard - Michigan St

Matt Harper is beginning second season as Video Coordinator at Michigan State.  Harper coordinates all aspects of the Spartan video department, including practices, games, opponent film exchange, coaches' video packages and team highlight films.

Harper maintains the video network and oversees the setup and breakdown of all video equipment, including video trade via the internet.

A native of Bronson, Mich., Harper is a graduate of Michigan State University where he earned a bachelor's degree in telecommunication with a broadcast management/media arts concentration in 1999.

While a student at MSU, Harper worked as an athletic student manager for the Spartan football team. He also carried student assistant duties for the Michigan State sports broadcasting team including doing work for Spartan Stadium jumbotron.

Following graduation, Harper held assistant video coordinator positions at Michigan State and Northwestern until his promotion to coordinator of video services at Northwestern in July of 2004.

He held that position until he went to XOS Technologies as a field support technician in 2006. After a brief stint with XOS, Harper returned to NU in January, 2007.   He then returned to MSU in February, 2009.

Harper and his wife, Carrie, were married in May of 2003. They have one daughter, Isabella Grace, born April 17, 2008. The Harpers reside Lansing.

 

Tom Shepard is beginning his 24th season as Video Coordinator at Michigan State. 

Shepard coordinates the video aspect of the Spartan video department including practices, games, and coaches’ video packages. 

Shepard also helps maintain the video network and oversees the setup and breakdown of all video equipment.

Shepard is a native of Essexville, MI.

Prior to coming to MSU Shepard worked as a film processor at White Star Video in Lansing. 

Shepard and his wife Barb have two daughters, Stephanie, 29 and Michelle, 25.  The Shepards reside in Lansing.

Big 12 - Jamie Guy - Colorado

      Jamie Guy is in his sixth year as CU's director of sports video and his eighth year overall on the Colorado staff, as he joined the department in August 2001.  He was promoted to his current position in the fall of 2004 after working just over three years as the assistant director.

      Guy, 34, came to CU from the Chicago Enforcers of the now-defunct XFL, where he worked the lone season of the league's existence.

      He was selected as the video coordinator of the year for 2005-06 in the Big 12 Conference, as the awards are coordinated and voted by members of the Collegiate Sports Video Association; members of each conference select the winner for their respective leagues, and the recipients are placed on the national ballot for the overall CSVA award.

      He graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1998 with a bachelor's degree in general studies.  As a student, he worked in the Bearcats' sports video office for four years.  Prior to entering the sports video profession, he worked as an electrician's apprentice and as a staff manager at Fitworks Fitness.

      Born March 18, 1975 in Cincinnati, Ohio, he graduated from Lawrence Central High School (Indianapolis, Ind.) in 1994, where he lettered in track and football.  His hobbies include collecting football memorabilia and playing the guitar.  He is married to the former Kimberly Ernst.

C-USA - John Kvatek - Central Florida

      John Kvatek enters his sixth season as a football support staff member and the Director of Video Services at UCF.

      At UCF, Kvatek has overseen unprecedented growth in the Video Services Department. Along with producing all coaches' video, the department has assumed responsibility for producing all video board content, coaches shows, television ads, and live-event web-streaming.

      Prior to his arrival at UCF, Kvatek worked at Pinnacle Systems, Inc., where he worked from 1999-2004. During his tenure at Pinnacle, Kvatek served as a product marketing manager for Networked News and Sports Editing Solutions.

      Prior to Pinnacle Systems, Kvatek was the athletic video services coordinator at Wisconsin from 1995-99. During his time in Madison, Kvatek was responsible for the development and utilization of the world's first digital video network for sports video analysis and editing and was a member of the Kohl Center Design Team.

      Kvatek has also worked as a video coordinator at Virginia Tech and Miami (Ohio) in their respective athletic departments. He is a 1995 graduate of Miami University with a bachelor's degree in Mass Communications.

      A 21-year veteran in the business, Kvatek was named the 2006-07 Bob Matey National Video Coordinator of the Year at the annual Collegiate Sports Video Association Convention in May of 2007. The national honor followed on the heels of being named the 2007 C-USA Video Coordinator of the Year. Previously, he was the Big Ten Video Coordinator of the Year in 1998. Kvatek is also a member of the Customer Advisory Board of XOS Technologies, Inc., and is a member of the Sports Video Group (SVG) Advisory Board.

      Kvatek, originally a resident of Creekside, PA, and his wife Michelle have three sons: Conor, Liam and Declan. They reside in Orlando.

Independent - John McGuire - Navy

      John McGuire is in his 14th year at Navy, where he serves as Video Coordinator.

      Prior to Navy, McGuire spent five seasons working with the University of Rutgers football program from 1992-96. He had also previously worked 14 years with Tucker Sport Films of Philadelphia and four seasons with the Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars of the United States Football League.

      McGuire earned his bachelor's degree from Villanova University in 1978, where he majored in Marketing. He currently resides in Annapolis.

MAC - Matt Werder - University at Buffalo

      Matt Werder is in his fourth season as video coordinator for the UB football program.  In 2007, he was named Mid-American Conference Video Coordinator of the Year by the Collegiate Sports Video Association.  Werder was a video assistant for the Buffalo Bills (1997-1999) and video director for the Buffalo Destroyers (1999-2002).  He was a letterwinner on UB’s football team from 1990-1993, and received a B.S. and Ed.M. from UB.  He and his wife Betsy have a daughter, Ellianna (6) and son Nathaniel (3).

MTN West - Brian Murphy - San Diego St

      Brian Murphy joined the San Diego State athletic department staff in August 2003 as the video coordinator. In his position, he films and edits the Aztecs' football games and coordinates film exchange with other schools. He is in charge of all video packages used by the football coaches in their scouting and game preparation.

        Murphy's responsibilities also include overseeing the day-to-day operations of the video room and assisting with the video needs of other SDSU sports.
        From 1997-2000, Murphy was the assistant video director of the San Diego Chargers. He filmed and edited games and practices and assisted the NFL with the Super Bowl held in San Diego in 1998. He also provided the NFL with video support for the 1999 Holiday Bowl.  He resides with his wife Shawna and their daughter Cali in Pacific Beach, California

PAC-10 - Mike Ortiz - Oregon St

      Mike Ortiz is in his third year as the director of the football video operations unit. His responsibilities include managing all video services for the football team, including highlight and team videos. He also coordinates video exchanges with opposing teams and is the producer for the department's recruit video for an annual fundraising event in Portland, among other duties.

      Ortiz came to OSU from XOS Technologies where he served as national field representative for just under two years. At XOS he was responsible for software installs and servicing of all levels of NCAA programs, NHL, NBA and NFL teams.

      Prior to his employment at XOS, Ortiz was at the University of Washington for six years as assistant video operations director. He also held a similar role at the University of Colorado for two years. While at Washington he worked mainly with the football program along with the other Olympic sports.

      He is a 1998 graduate of the University of Colorado with a degree in journalism (broadcast news), and worked two years as a student in the school's athletic video operations department. He also was an intern at KCNC-TV in Denver.

     Ortiz is married to the former Dora Deese.

SEC - Doug Aucoin - LSU

      Doug Aucoin enters his 13th season as LSU’s video coordinator. During that time he has developed LSU’s football video department into the one of the finest in the nation.

      Aucoin, who has twice been named the SEC Video Coordinator of the Year (2000 and 2007) by his peers, oversees LSU’s multi-million dollar video department that rivals that of most NFL teams. Following the 2007 season, Aucoin was named a finalist for National Video Coordinator of the Year.

      Aucoin, who joined the Tigers in 1997 after a stint with Tulane, is responsible for analytical support of computer and video technologies including the taping of games and practices, opponent video exchange, self-scout and opponent breakdowns, and tape cut-ups used as a teaching tool.

      Aucoin also manages the computer network that the football coaches use for statistical analysis as well as self-scouting and the scouting of opponents. Another of Aucoin’s responsibilities is the production of a weekly highlight and motivational video for the football team.

      Aucoin oversees a staff of eight people, which includes one full-time assistant, one graduate assistant and six student assistants.

      Prior to working for Tulane, Aucoin was employed by the New Orleans Saints as an assistant to his brother, Albert, who was video director for the Saints. Their father, Erby, is a member of the Saints Hall of Fame for his pioneering analytical film work in the early years of the National Football League.

      A native of New Orleans, Aucoin graduated from Riverdale High School and the University of New Orleans, earning his degree in business administration in 1995. In the summer of 1998, Aucoin married the former Angela Bordelon and the couple has three children, Ryan, Shane and Chanler.

SUNBELT - Hank Wilson - Western Kentucky

      After serving one year as the Assistant Video Coordinator at UCLA, Hank Wilson is in his second season on the Hill as the Hilltoppers’ Video Coordinator.  No stranger to WKU, Wilson worked for five seasons as a student video assistant for the Topper football program from 2003 to 2008

      Wilson and his staff are responsible for filming WKU games and practices and then editing them with the XOS Thunder system.  They work with the coaching staff to provide specialized footage, or “cut-ups”, of the team—as well as opponents—for the purposes of coaching, scouting, and game-planning. 

      Other duties Wilson undertakes include game film exchange via the internet, all recruiting videos, and production of highlight videos. 

      At UCLA in 2008-09, Wilson worked under the direction of Ken Norris, who is considered one of the most innovative and respected minds in the profession.

      During his time with the Bruins, Wilson served as the Head Video Coordinator for the 19-time National Champion men’s volleyball team as well as shooting highlights for men’s basketball, cross country, water polo, baseball, and golf. 

      In January 2010, Wilson was selected to work on the field production team of the Rose Bowl and the Citi BCS National Championship games. 

      A member of the CSVA and the Sun Belt Conference representative to that professional organization, Wilson graduated from WKU in May 2008 with his Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation Administration. 

WAC - Bill Garren - Utah St.

     Bill Garren is in his fifth year as the Director of Video Operations for the Utah State University athletic department.

      Garren is responsible for managing all aspects of athletic video and editing within USU’s athletics department which includes training and supervising a staff of student assistants to shoot all the football practices and games along with men’s and women’s basketball games. His responsibilities also include overseeing the day-to-day operations of the video room and assisting with the video needs of other sports.  

      Garren also provides technical support and training for coaches and support staff using the latest video technology available in Webb Electronics’ Advantage editing system. During the construction of the three-story, state-of-the-art Jim and Carol Laub Athletics-Academics Complex, Garren also assisted in the design and technical architecture of the video room and the facility.

      He served as the video coordinator and assistant to the offensive line at Idaho State in 2000 and 2001 before taking over as the video coordinator at San Jose State for the 2002 season.  Garren was an assistant football and track coach at his high school in Montrose, Colo. in 2003.  He then spent the 2004 and 2005 seasons as video coordinator and assistant to the offensive line at Idaho State before coming to USU.

      Garren, who earned his general associate’s degree from Ricks College in 1998, also earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Idaho State University in 2002.  Garren graduated with honors with a Master’s degree in athletic administration from Idaho State in 2005.

      Garren, who was born April 3, 1976 in Grand Junction, Colo., was an all-conference football player at Montrose HS in Montrose, Colo.  He played two seasons at Ricks Junior College (currently BYU-Idaho) and then one season at Idaho State before beginning his video career.  He and his wife Melinda have four children, Maia, Ellie, Milly, and Tyler.
